Deep Dive: Steve Bannon to National Security Council

A known white supremacist who ran a site that has published racist, misogynistic, and anti-semitic articles who was previously named by Trump as a chief strategist has now been elevated to the National Security Council by Executive Memo on Sunday, January 29th.

The same Executive Memo removes the chairman of the Joint Chief of Staffs and the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) from the permanent seats on the council. The current DNI, James Clapper, was one of the decision makers in removing Trump’s pick General Michael Flynn from his previous role as head of Defense Intelligence Agency for inadequate follow-through in addition to other reasons. It is suspected that General Michael Flynn is in part behind this shake up due to his reluctance to have members of the council who outrank his three-star standing.

This move to politicize national security comes amid Bannon and Chief of Staff Reince Priebus arguing over how the Department of Homeland Security should implement an earlier Executive Order on banning people from 7 Muslim-majority countries with regard to Greencard holders. The Executive Order on banning the immigrants and the insistence on it applying to Greencard holders are the results of Bannon’s mistrust of immigrants and belief that the US have too many Asian CEOs.

Who really is running the Executive Branch and has Trump realized he’s as Bannon put it a “blunt instrument for the [alt-right]?”  Let’s not forget too that this latest ill-advised shake-up is happening while six agencies are investigating Trump, his campaign, and inner circle on their ties to Russia and Bannon sets out to make the press the administration’s enemy by calling the media “the opposition party.”
